Fake start-stop-daemon called, doing nothing--Wha???
Don't you think it's odd that he doesn't even mention what version of the nVidia drivers he's using? He mentions applying drivers for the Intel chipset, but nothing about the video card. The newsforge article seems to be identical to the one at the Reg, but if i am wrong, please let me know.

MythTV - any users?
Once you have uninstalled, the next time you reboot there should be nothing of WB in memory. I don' know much about how the windows registry works If your motherboard has a via chipset then its even more likely to be the cause. (nvidia + via + XP = crash / hang ) The nvidia 23.11 drivers are especially bad.

Ahhhh I broke Linux?
Should this still continue to give you the problem then reinstall your Windows 2000 with the repair option. Answer2 nv4mini is the Nvidia driver. Reply Installing and unistalling drivers is my only and true job. But I done it once more and nothing happened. Remember that on XP PRO everything works fine.

Nvidia drivers...
The nVidia driver installer choked the first time I ran it, because it was looking for kernel headers in the wrong place. I was able to pass the correct location of the kernel headers to the nVidia installer on the command line with the --kernel-include-path option, however, and then it installed like a champ.

I figured I would stop using Windows completely, but after trying for hours to get the printer working (HP 680C, replaced it with a 940C in the summer, who knows if it works in Linux), and then getting good nVidia drivers for the GeForce 2 I had back then (ATI Radeon 64Mb now), I got most of it working,

Quake III Arena, no worky w/KDE 3.1 but all other OK
No writes are allowed to it and if a write occurs then the page fault routine deals with it. The Nvidia drivers will be allocating some RAM, but there will also be the AGP and framebuffers etc. That has nothing (directly) to do with process RSS. In the case of the framebuffer it is directly mapping video memory

Don't know what nVidia drivers were available at that time, but it wouldn't surprise me if F1 2001 worked just fine with the official release drivers that were then available, and has only been screwed up by the newer drivers that were released to support the new nVidia chipsets. That would be typical.

Many people put in their 5 year old driver CDs and force the drivers to install. You get nothing but problems. Don't do it. No big deal, hell even Nvidia isn't evil just human. I used the great driver roll back feature and problem solved. I then waited for their next driver to come out and it worked fine.

New graphics adapter with decent drivers?
If it tries to install the nVidia driver, then you haven't removed the corresponding .inf file. Cancel the install and manually select the standard PCI VGA driver from Device Manager. Then insert the new card. If Win98 wants to install drivers, then let it install only the Standard PCI VGA driver and nothing else.
